KATE AND CLIFFORD STANLEY SCHOLARSHIP FUND (2005)

This fund was established in honour of Bill Stanley’s parents and is awarded to Grand Manan students pursuing studies at university. Kate Stanley, Bill’s mother, moved to Grand Manan to teach primary school after finishing her teaching studies in Fredericton. This is where she met and later married Clifford. At that time they had one son, Bill, and in 1940 Clifford was sent overseas with the Canadian Armed Forces until 1945. When he returned home, he and Kate had another son, Andrew, who was born in 1950. Clifford then became a Customs Officer with Customs and Excise Canada on Grand Manan. This job subsequently took the Stanley family to other areas of New Brunswick throughout Clifford’s career. He died in Saint John in 1982 at the age of 69. Kate died in 2008 at the age of 92. Andrew Stanley died in 2001. The Kate and Clifford Stanley Scholarship honours Bill’s family and their contribution to their family and life on Grand Manan.
